As part of our Centenary celebrations we are hearing from former members of the football club and are welcoming them to share their stories and memories. We asked the legendary Sue Snell to write a short piece about her UBFC Memories all the way from Canada. Here are her memories of Upper Beeding Football Club.
I was born and bred Steyning but moved to Upper Beeding in 1978. It’s such a lovely little Village and so many friendly people. We took over the Rising Sun Pub, and that’s when we adopted UBFC.
I tried to make most of their home games, even in the busy times of running a Pub! But they all came back to eat, I lost count on how many Sausages I cooked over the years! I used to look forward to the John Brown Trophy that was held at the Steyning ground, I remember John when I was growing up in Shooting Field. Mark Munns and I would have a wager on who was going to win, who ever lost put money over the bar so the winning team could have a drink. No hard feelings.
There was some very good players over the years, too many to mention. But a few players moved on to greater things, Max Rowland coaching in Australia and Sam White in Dubai. I miss my Saturday afternoons shouting "Come on Beeding" football/Soccer isn’t the same in Canada.
I must be the only local supporter to have “Upper Beeding FC” tattooed on my hip, but you’ll have to take my word for that, LOL
Congratulations to you all on your 100th Anniversary…..
