MATCH REPORT: ANGMERING VILLAGE v UBFC

Another warm September day, with a troublesome wind blowing down the pitch greeted us for our visit to Decoy Drive

Just one change for Beeding as recent new recruit and ex Beeding Youth player Callum Towse came in for the absent Kris Harding. With also Ben Ward, Drew McGill, Chris Barnett and Henry Hayden also unavailable it was good to welcome back Scott Dermott and Lee Knight to bench duty.

While far from a classic, you couldn’t fault the commitment and desire of both teams who largely cancelled each other out. Angmering playing downwind came closest in the first half with shots coming off the bar and post. After the break with wind on our backs Harry Smith and Jonny Taylor were more of a threat, Gunny and Leo nearly snatched a late goal from corners but it wasn’t to be, and Angmering had their own chances.

In the circumstances our back 5 did a superb job to come away with a clean sheet. Leo edges MOM after a titanic battle with the impressive Johnny Hendrick all game. Leo has been performing at a consistently high standard all season and been a major factor in our unbeaten start. Callum Towse can be pleased with his debut and further strengthens the squad. Otherwise, very much a case if you aren’t playing well enough to win the game, don’t lose it.

Elsewhere wins for Montpelier Villa and TD Shipley with a late winner, sees us drop to third in the table, 15 pts from 7 games, and we remain unbeaten. Next week’s game v Copthorne is postponed with 3 of our lads, Gunny, Kris and JT successfully coming through the trials to make the SCFL Div 2 ‘Sussex Reps’ squad to play Essex and Suffolk Border League at Harwich FC. A great opportunity, that we fully support.
