MATCH REPORT - JARVIS BROOK v UBFC

Kris Harding 2 mins, Jake Cockerton 85 mins

Macron SCFL Div 2 Supplementary Shield

Sat 17 April 21

Warmest day of the year so far, early kick off on the Kent border, players missing…….same for both teams so get on with it. And we did.

Helped by an opening goal inside the first 2 mins when a delicious free kick delivered by Joe Warner into a dangerous area got the faintest of flick-ons by the big man, Kris Harding (apparently !). 4 goals in 3 starts in the Shield for Kris.

Playing down the slope, Jarvis Brook fully tested us in the first half and while it was to be expected, we were guilty of giving the ball away too often and inviting pressure. Keeper Dan did well to get his finger tips to a header off a defender to turn it over the bar in a close scare. 0-1 to Beeding HT.

The second half started the same with Ben Ward going close immediately on the re-start. Beeding were more creative and enjoyed better possession in the second 45, as the midfield worked hard to get a foothold, without really troubling the home keeper. Brook played to their strengths and posed an aerial threat from set plays and crosses. Our centre backs were at their very best, with quality defending and great organisation in dealing with the pressure.

The game was finally settled 5 mins from time, with our best move of the match. Pat O’Sullivan, proving to be the king of the assists recently, played a perfectly weighted pass inside the full back for sub Jake Cockerton to cut in and clinically finish. A just reward for the effort in making the game.

Not at our best, with some guys not quite at it, and while the margin of victory slightly flattered us, hard work and determination to not concede got us over the line where previously we would have come away with nothing from our visit to Lime Kiln. Lewie, Gunny and Mike Spence were excellent as a unit at the heart of the defence, with the latter deservedly getting the vote for MOM, massive performance from Mike, well played. Gunny right up their - leading by example, organising and demanding to the final whistle. He knows what it takes to get something against tough opponents.
