MATCH REPORT - MONTPELIER VILLA v UBFC

Macron SCFL Div 2

Sat 3 October

Warr 65 mins

A massive 3 points for Beeding in a hard fought, cracking game against last years runaway league leaders. Now unbeaten in our opening 5 games, we moved up to 3rd in the table, 2 behind pacesetters TD Shipley who were winning at Jarvis Brook, and Rustington.

Places in the starting 11 this week for Justin Gregory and Ryan Warr, coming in for Jake Cockerton and Kris Harding.

It was no surprise to see a young talented Villa quickly into their stride, switching play and probing on the wings and through the channels as they were on top for much of the first half. Some resolute defending, a cracking save from keeper Dan Banks, and some wayward finishing meant we were glad to turn round 0-0 at HT. However, Manager Hollis had seen enough to make the most of an enforced change when the injured Leo Trower left the action at right back to be replaced on the wide left by Jonny Taylor, and positional changes for Ward and Gregory.

The dynamic of the game changed with Beeding much more on the front foot in the second half, and a couple of well created chances had been spurned before a flowing move down the right saw the ball pulled back for Warr to let loose the left hammer from 20 yards, and gave the Villa keeper no chance with a great strike. While Villa kept their football patterns flowing, the speed of the first half had slowed, and the Beeding back 4, well protected by the hard working midfield were keeping  the opponents at a distance that offered keeper Banks plenty of protection. In truth good chances for Taylor, Rowland and sub Harding could have extended the lead,  but we were able to see out the game with no great alarms. To much rejoicing, and relief, a superb team effort got us a big win.  This Montpelier Villa side can play, well coached and organised, they came up against a Beeding team that upped their game for an important match.

Normally picking a MOM in tight games where every player was on it, is tricky. This time, NO! Mike Spence was immense in the back four, never putting a foot or head wrong, absolutely outstanding this week Mike!

UBFC Line Up: Banks Trower Jamieson Spence Gregory  Gunn Towse Rowland Ward, Warr  O’Sullivan.

Used Subs: Taylor, Harding, McGill

Scorers: Warr

MOM: Spence

UBFC Reserves completed a very satisfying Beeding double with an equally big 3-1 win at Rudgwick to make it 6 points from their opening 2 games in West Sussex Premier League!
