MATCH REPORT - UBFC 3 v 0 JARVIS BROOK

UBFC 3 v 0 JARVIS BROOK

Scorers Harding x 2, Short

SAT 8 FEBRUARY 2020

MACRON SCFL DIV 2

The time spent prepping the pitch was well rewarded with a good win against tough opponents in 5th placed Jarvis Brook, and the 3 points moved us to within 4 points of leaders Montpelier Villa who endured another frustrating match postponed due to the heavy overnight rain.

We were closer to full strength this week, just Trower and Taylor absent, and to be able to start Gunny and Callum in midfield for the first time in 5 games was welcome. Lee Donaldson was given a rare start at right back.

Jarvis Brook were on the front foot creating early pressure forcing keeper Dan Banks into making smart saves. A few of ours were looking understandably a little rusty but soon picked the pace of the game as we started to work the Brook keeper with chances created of our own. Kris was gutted to see an effort clip the cross bar but his wait for his 30th goal of the season wasn’t to take long as another sweeping move down the right saw a beaut of a cross Lee headed down by Gunny for Kris to smash home on the volley. A contender for ‘team goal of the season’. An entertaining close first half, plenty still to do. HT 1-0.

Our lead was to be extended on the hour mark when young Justin Gregory following a neat 1 : 2 bursting clean through to be brought down for a stonewall penalty. Kris converted down the middle past the stand-in keeper after the Brook were to lose their glove man to injury shortly after the start of the second half. Our own keeper Dan was to enjoy a much quieter time in the second 45 as we got control of the midfield and further chances for Kris, Chris Barnett and Rolo were to be spurned. The momentum was kept up with Evan, Sandy and Alfie introduced, and Evan finished neatly on 81 mins to bring the game to a close with a 3 v 0 win.

Equally pleasing was the desire to keep a clean sheet against more than useful opponents who have the quality to play a key role in the title run in to SCFL Div 2.

MOM was a tough one, with all playing their part in the victory and several noteworthy performances. Couldn’t bring myself to tell him in the Riser after, but skipper Sam Gunn was outstanding. 2 assists, at the heart of everything defensively and going forward, and above all terrific leadership as he demanded every last ounce of effort and concentration from his team mates. Well played Gunny.
