The unbeaten run extends to 10 games……but is it too many draws ?
Time will tell, as a Beeding some way off their best had to show resilience to earn a hardly deserved point with a late equaliser on our return to Steyning 3G.
Our struggles were in no small measure due to the quality of Charlwood who were excellent for 70 mins and could have taken the game beyond us.
At it right from the start, they had rattled the bar inside 2 minutes as they took the game to us. Beeding gradually found their way into the game, finding joy down both flanks and with Rolo put clean through 1 on 1 with the man mountain keeper, only to lift the ball wide. Half chances were created for Kris, Pat and Ryan but Charlwood were getting their blocks in. Approaching half time, and a free kick conceded in a dangerous position centrally on the edge of the box, was to provide the opening goal for the visitors. Adam Lippett getting a well struck left footer round the wall and beyond the despairing dive of keeper Dan. Charlwood were worth their half time lead.
The game opened up in the second half with Beeding improving with the early introduction of substitutes Ryan Singers and Drew McGill who got us on the front foot, but without really troubling the keeper. The match looked like turning away from us when on 70 mins and the Charlwood forward through 1 on 1 on the advancing Beeding keeper but with little option to handle outside of his box to prevent a second goal it was correctly called a straight red for Dan, who trudged off a disconsolate figure. The resulting Charlwood free kick was blocked by the wall, and moments later stand in keeper Mike Spence pulled off a brilliant save to keep the margin down to the one goal. A strong shout for a penalty and another off the woodwork were to deny the visitors.
Sensing we had got out of jail, 10 man Beeding went on to play their best football of the match in taking the game to Charlwood, and with minutes left Lewie Jamieson joined the attack to finish a move he started in our own half to grab an equaliser in an intense finish to the game.
Harsh on Charlwood but a determined effort from the Beeding boys to ensure if we can’t win the game, don’t lose it. Full credit to the management team Tom and JJ in the absence again of Jamie Hollis, for making the right calls to get something out of the game. MOM – Justin Gregory, Mike Spence and Lewie Jamieson were excellent in keeping us in the game, with the latter’s late goal the deciding factor. We were again indebted to our back 5.
With Rustington winning away at Jarvis Brook, and TD Shipley v Copthorne postponed, we slip to second in the table. Next up, away to improving St Francis Rangers.
