MATCH REPORT - UBFC v BRIGHTON ELECTRICITY

Macron SCFL Div 2

At Steyning Town FC Shooting Field, Steyning.

Sat 5 September

Pat O’Sullivan 90 mins

Att 60

Our first game of the Macron SCFL Div 2 season, and the start of a new era as we Groundshare at Steyning Town FC, and look to build on the last 18 months work to position the Club in readiness for a move up to Senior football at some point in the future.

Brighton Electricity gave us an insight into what to expect on the 3G as they raised their game and proved to be a much improved, resilient, organised outfit that made us work for the whole 90 mins before we finally broke the deadlock.

Debuts for new signings Pat O’Sullivan and Ryan Warr, and the start of a second spell with Beeding for Ryan Singers in midfield looked to give us plenty of options going forward, and the first half wasn’t without its chances, but they weren’t taken and we found ourselves 0-0 at HT. Leo Trower picked up a knock and was replaced by home from Uni Kai Green, who was to prove more than up to the job, having his best 45 for Yellows.

Green, Spence, Dermott and Gregory gave us a solid base at the back, and keeper Banks was able to safely deal with Brighton Electricity counter attacks. Joe Warner and Kris Harding freshened things up as Gunny and Warr gave way for a final push. Both were at the heart of a storming finish as BE tired and the game opened up but just when it looked like it was going to be one of those days when we just wouldn’t score, as we approached injury time great hold up play by Kris to work his way into the box, gain a yard of space to the waiting Pat 6 yards out, and finally BEs resistance was broken. 1-0 up with seconds to go, and much relief and joy amongst the Beeding Boys.

Full credit to Brighton Electricity who gave us a tough examination, and showed once again if we are slightly less than our best it can be a frustrating afternoon. Fortunately, the attitude and commitment of the whole squad was spot on and got us over the line. Plenty of contenders for MOM, and it went to Ryan Singers who gave us the control in midfield to keep driving forward, well played Ryan.

With opening day wins elsewhere for Montpelier Villa, Rustington, Copthorne, Jarvis Brook, TD Shipley and Worthing Town the result became all the more important.
